The New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is a fly species that lays its eggs in the open wounds of warm-blooded animals. Once the larvae hatch, they feed on the host’s living tissue, causing severe distress, infection, and, if untreated, death.
Historically, the United States successfully eradicated the screwworm by the early 1980s through an extensive and costly Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) program.
