Lawmakers from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party have intensified calls to restore economic cooperation with Russia, leveraging a recent economic forum to challenge the current German government’s stance on sanctions. The push occurred this week in Berlin, where party representatives argued that the ongoing energy crisis and industrial stagnation necessitate a strategic pivot back toward Russian commodity imports.

A Shifting Political Landscape

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Germany has drastically reduced its reliance on Russian gas and oil, moving away from a decades-long policy of energy interdependence. The German federal government, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has consistently framed this decoupling as a matter of national security and moral imperative.
