In a major push to bridge the critical gap in its fifth-generation fighter fleet, India is reportedly in advanced discussions with Russia for the acquisition of the Su-57E stealth fighter. The potential deal involves the direct purchase of two squadrons to meet immediate operational requirements for deep-strike and air-dominance roles, providing the Indian Air Force (IAF) with a potent edge in contested airspaces.
Beyond a simple purchase, the talks emphasize a massive “Make in India” component. Russia has offered an unprecedented unrestricted Transfer of Technology (ToT), including the aircraft’s sensitive source codes. This would allow Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to establish local production lines, potentially manufacturing additional squadrons domestically. Reports suggest HAL facilities in Nashik and Koraput are already being evaluated for infrastructure readiness to build the advanced Izdeliye 177S engines and airframes.
This move comes at a strategic crossroads for India’s aerospace ambitions. While the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) remains the long-term priority, the Su-57E is being viewed as a vital “bridging solution.” By integrating Russian stealth technology now, India could catalyze its own domestic defense ecosystem, gaining mastery over radar-absorbent materials and advanced sensor fusion that will eventually feed into the AMCA project.
If finalized, this partnership would re-anchor the decades-old Indo-Russian defense axis. The Su-57E, equipped with internal weapons bays and supercruise capabilities, offers a cost-effective alternative to Western platforms while ensuring strategic autonomy. As the IAF seeks to maintain a 42-squadron strength, this “Felon” deal could be the game-changer that defines India’s air power for the next half-century.
